This nitrification unit is the simplest and most economic way of maintaining the correct chemical balance in an artificial aquatic environment.

The passage of water through the unit enables the bacteria present in the nuggets to neutralise ammonia and nitrite converting it to harmless nitrate. The lack of the bacteria will leave toxic compounds such as ammonia and nitrite to propagate and not be converted into the nitrate as used by most living organisms as a source of nitrogen.

The ammonia that builds up in artificial ponds is a by-product of mineralization of fish waste and vegetation that collects in the water. The nitrite is the breakdown product of ammonia and therefore requires conversion into usable nitrate as soon as possible. Alternatively these effluents can be removed by changing the pond water. This is a waste of water and most likely to be a very traumatic to the fish and general pond life. Changing the water may therefore not be advisable and most likely create an unnecessary source of pollution.

This nitrification unit when charged with an 80ml dose will treat 1000 gallons (4,545ltrs) of water. This charge capacity may require replenishing three times annually depending on number of fish, pond life and potential vegetation pollution from trees, etc.

This nitrification unit is to be installed in the return pipework to the pond of the filter circulating system after the u.v. Do not attempt to place it in the water flow before the u.v.
